Radon: A Hidden Danger in Minnesota Homes
Radon, a colorless and odorless gas from the soil, is a major health risk in Minnesota. Long-term exposure can cause lung cancer, and Minnesota's average radon levels are over three times higher than the U.S. average due to our geology and home heating practices.
In Polk County, 70% of homes tested from 2010-2020 had radon levels of 4 pCi/L or higher. The only way to detect radon is through testing, recommended every 2-5 years or during real estate transactions.
Free radon test kits are available at Polk County Public Health offices in Crookston, East Grand Forks, and McIntosh.
